One Day at a Time

Today’s Verse:  Psalm 118:24   “This is the day the Lord has made; therefore we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

We are inherently weak – no willpower.   That is why it is so hard to overcome any type of addiction.  We know we want to overcome, we need to overcome, and we try to overcome, but we give in too often to our weaknesses.

So how do we overcome?  For me, it works to take it one day at a time.  Every morning when I get up, after I give thanks for another day, I tell myself that I will not indulge in any unhealthy behavior, just for today.   If I can make it until nightfall without failing, it is a victory for me.  Today is all that we can handle. I know that we should set long term goals, but if we fail to meet those goals, we feel like a failure. If we can set short term goals, just one day at a time, we can have a series of successes and feel like a winner.  How exciting to be a winner at the end of the day!

Someone once wrote, “Life by the yard is hard, but life by the inch is a cinch”.   This is so true in this case.   If we go one day at a time, we will get there. Think of the inchworm, creeping along so slowly towards his destination.   He does not worry about when he will get there, but he just keeps inching along.   We must look at our addictions and go inch by inch to overcome.

As we inch along, we must remember that God is always standing by and helping us. All we have to do is ask.    We can handle today with God’s help.  Hold on to God by faith in Jesus Christ, knowing that He has you in his hands today. He will provide grace and power each day as it comes.  And you will be a winner every day!   God’s blessings on you today as you face your struggles.  Let us rejoice and be glad for our daily victory!
