Today’s verse: Exodus 3:17 “So I said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey.”
Life is full of ups and downs. As we travel through life, there often is a fear of the unknown, of what the future holds in store for us. Many of us may currently be facing overwhelming difficulties. Those who suffer from addictions or bad health may be particularly fearful of their unknown future. We simply need to trust in God.
We fear simple things that affect our life. We are afraid to quit smoking because we might gain weight. We are afraid to go to the gym because people might laugh at us. We may even be afraid to eat healthy because it’s too expensive, or because we don’t know how to cook. Many simple things can affect us in various ways when we are afraid of the future.
We fear big life events as well. We are afraid to quit using drugs because we need the crutch to deal with life. We fear life-threatening illnesses because we don’t know what the future holds, or if we will recover. These are legitimate fears, and God can help us through them. Never lose faith, and pray unceasingly.
Even joyful events can bring fear of the unknown. Think of a time in life when there was joy, but also fear. For me, this occurred when I was pregnant. I was thrilled but at the same time I was scared – would I be a good mom, would he be born healthy, could we afford a baby, and so on. Another example is when I got divorced. I was so happy to be out of a bad marriage, but very fearful of how I could raise two boys on my own. And then there is retirement – are we ready? Do we have enough money? Will we live long enough to see grandchildren (that I am seriously beginning to doubt!). What do you do in these cases? Pray and then hang on!
Think of all of the stories in the Bible, where people left their homes to follow someone into the unknown. Moses led the people out of Egypt. They were thrilled to be out of bondage, but what lay ahead for them? They did not know, but they let God guide them into the unknown and they had faith that he would not let them down. Jesus called his followers and they left their lives behind, not knowing what lay ahead. Do not be afraid to go boldly into the future. Put your hand in God’s hand and he will guide you. Blessings on your journey!
